The Golden Hour
SPRING BREAK 2013
Joshua Toussaint Mercier (aka Mercy) remembered the golden hour.  The critical life saving hour following a traumatic injury.  With proper medical treatment, there is a great possibility of survival.  Without proper medical treatment, Taps.  He remembered the roar of the medevac chopper’s blades rotating overhead, kicking up desert dust.  His bullet riddled body lay on a gurney.  It was shuffled onto the chopper by four armed soldiers.  He never thought he would be the patient.  He thought he would die by bullet or bomb, not feeling a thing.  He would awaken when Jesus resurrected him.
His vision hazy, he recognized the outlines of a white cross and the colors of an American flag.  As his mirage continued, the ambulance drove him to the ER.  He never heard the siren blaring.  Juan Pablo, by his side, rode with him in the ambulance.  He told the EMTs Mercy was his best friend.  Mercy faded in and out of consciousness as the EMTs treated the gunshot wounds in his chest.  According to the EMTs, Mercy was in critical condition.
In the OR, on the operating table, the intensity of the overhead surgical lights blinded Mercy.  It was no different than the triple digit noon sun in Iraq, except this time his body shivered.  The gloved surgeons with surgical gowns seemed like adults leaning over an infant.  Nausea set in.  His airway was safe but there were internal chest injuries.  His breath was shortened and it hurt to inhale.  He breathed easier with the oxygen mask.
The fentanyl IV drip made the pain dissipate.  Fentanyl was twice as strong as morphine he remembered from his medic training.  He stared up at the ceiling.  The metallic scent of iodine assaulted his nasal passages.  All sounds disappeared around him except his own heartbeat.  He reached for his chest but his hand fell to the bedside.  The luminous room darkened like an eclipse.

Random Release & Review . . . Reawaken His Heart by K. L. Myers

Ebook
Title: Reawken His Heart
Author: KL Myers
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 21
Goodreads
Synopsis
Braedyn

I'm an asshole. I wasn't always this way; life has made me this way. I once believed in the good in all people, but then "life happened". I'm not religious; I don't believe in God. How can someone who created the world be so willing to take away life and all I believed in and loved?
I was young. I believed in love and forever. Brooklynn Marsden was my high school sweetheart. We grew up together in Phoenix and she became my wife. I loved life with her more than anything. Until it was over. Then I hated life and vowed I would never love a woman again.
Women became an outlet to release my pent-up frustrations. Wham bam thank you ma'am was the motto I lived for years.
Until Rylee.

Rylee

Men are pigs. You heard me. Pigs. They are selfish and only concerned with what benefits them both in life and in bed. I believed in Prince Charming like every other little girl. Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, they all got the knight in shining armor who saved them from their dreary little lives and made them the happiest girls on the face of the earth.
Those were stories written for little girls, making them believe that one day a man would sweep them off their feet and worship them. BULLSHIT!!! All I've found are the court jesters and a bunch of cheaters.

Gone is the carefree girl who dreamed of fairy tales and believed in soul mates. In her place is the woman who trusts no one.
Until Braedyn.

My Review:
3.7 stars

This book told the story of Braedyn's loss of the one he loved and Rylee's loss of basically herself. It's the tale of two broken people who are scared to branch out, scared to reach for more because of the heartache they've already suffered. Braedyn was essentially ok with the way his life had turned out. He had no intent on changing anything about his routine, regardless of how bad it was for him. Rylee, on the other hand, was fed up with the way her life had turned out. She was finally finding herself and wanted to make a change to establish herself in a better way, and that stated with her surrounding herself with people who were better for her. I liked that the author gave the characters hope in the form of each other. They both felt inexplicably safe and comfortable with each other. They both had their internal struggles, but handled them differently. Rylee was more of a "wait for the hammer to drop" kind of person, while Braelyn let his internal struggles manifest physically in him being a jerk to Rylee because he didn't know how to respond.

There wee some things about the book that I didn't like. For example, Braedyn kept referring to himself as an @$$hole or a d!(&, instead of just letting his actions speak for him. Yes, he did some pretty crappy things (like the text he sent Rylee or when he basically kicked her out without an explanation - and why did she compare all his other actions to Colt, but not these things), but his character is something I wanted to discover on my own versus him telling me. I also don't think the book synopsis really fit Rylee. It gave me the impression that she was an all out man eater or someone who was completely done with love, but her character seemed to be the opposite. She still believed in love and she still hoped to find her Prince Charming, she just didn't seem to be interested in a relationship with her abusive ex.

Overall, the plot was really good and I'm glad it ended the way it did. There were no cliffhangers and for that I'm grateful. I would recommend this book to people I think would enjoy it and I would read more by this author. I'm actually looking forward to getting Gauge's story.

"Hell-bent on revenge, Blaze is out to set the world on fire, and Valerie is the only one who can tame him. Will she pull him back from the brink or fall headlong into his dark past?"

Releasing the Demons
(The Order of the Senary, Book 1)

LD Rose
Dark Paranormal Romance

Synopsis:

Blaze Knight has been through hell and back, but the nightmares aren't over yet.

Five years after Blaze was maimed by Cyrus Chimola, a powerful vampire with a penchant for torture, he’s still trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. As a genetically engineered mercenary with the ability to bend fire to his will and to see in infrared, Blaze’s mission is to protect what’s left of humanity. When Chimola and his crew return to the Bronx gunning for Blaze’s blood, Blaze is forced to face the demons of his past. Hell-bent on revenge, he seeks the help of Valerie Medeiros, an NYPD detective who manages to steal his heart and save his life in more ways than one.

Motivated by her sister’s gruesome death, Valerie has made it her life’s goal to bury every vampire in the ground where they belong. When she brings in Blaze Knight for suspected murder, she discovers he’s not only innocent, he isn't a man at all—he's a half-vampire hybrid working with a band of brothers for the U.S. military. Valerie has a hard time trusting anything with fangs, yet she quickly falls headlong into Blaze’s life, a life full of darkness and horror she can’t even begin to fathom. The bodies are stacking up, but Valerie can’t seem to let go of this hybrid, a beautiful monster filled with pain, rage, and passion unlike anything she's ever known.

In a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, Blaze and Valerie will find danger at every turn, risking everything they’ve come to know and love, including one another.

My Review:
5 stars

Releasing the Demons tells us Blaze's story; one of the Knights in The Order of the Senary - a super secret government sanctioned covert ops group (basically super heroes the government is ok with...ha!). This book gives us background into why Blaze is the scarred, brooding, and moody hunk of burning love. It also introduced us to Valerie, the NYPD detective hell bent on bringing Blaze to justice for accusations of murder. It delves into her history and although, initially, not in detail, it shows us why she abhors vampires and why she's so reluctant to trust anyone.

I found the main characters very endearing and ultimately like able; even the supporting characters were relatable (you know, if you're a vampire-human hybrid - which we all are at some point). I guess Blaze could be considered an @$$hole, but he has the biggest heart ever and it's evident in his actions and his internal struggles that he cares deeply; not just for his brothers, but for most people in general. I loved that in spite of his horrific background (the opening scene, two words - Blaze, exsanguination) and his behemoth size, he's still able to be so gentle and caring. I love how his relationship with Valerie developed - he felt a connection to her and felt safe letting her into a place within him where many weren't allowed to go. Oh, and that whole super hero/Batman aspect - awesome!

What I didn't like was Valerie's reaction to her glimpse into her past. It was great to get how she perceived the action as opposed to Blaze's flashback of it. Two totally different perspectives, but both very insightful. I found myself wondering where was her trust. Where was her understanding for what he must have gone through to get him to that point. I understood that in that moment he represented the vampires that had changed her life, but she knew Blaze was different. She didn't even give him much of a chance to explain it.

I have to point out that LD Rose painted an amazing picture of the ruined landscape as well as the other settings within the book. She made the paranormal aspects of the book seem very real and believable. Regardless of the death and mayhem, it was a place I wouldn't mind mentally escaping to.

I'm very much looking forward to more from this author, especially within this series - specifically Rome! I would recommend this book to just about anyone who reads anything.

Excerpt:

Valerie kept her eyes locked on the glass windows covered with cigarette prices and beer ads, watching Tattoos pay up at the cash register. Once she reached the side of the building, she pressed her back against the warm brick wall. Sweat trickled down her spine and she wiped her clammy hands on her jeans before she drew her Beretta. She listened for the bell hanging above the store entrance, and when it jingled, she peered past the corner of the building.
There he is.
Holding a pack of Marlboros, he slipped it into his back pocket along with a silver money clip. He walked back toward the Chevelle, scanning the area one more time as he stepped off the concrete elevation.
This is it. Do it. Now!
With her gun pointed at the ground in a two-handed grip, Valerie pushed off the wall and turned the corner, staring at his back. Her voice was loud and clear as she called, “Blaze.”
He stopped and pivoted around. A fleeting expression of confusion filled his face, but it quickly turned into shock as she lifted her gun and shouted, “Freeze, NYPD!”
Gasps and shouts resounded as everyone turned their attention on her. Some people ducked while others gawked, and she wished they would just climb into their cars and get the hell out of here. She did her best to ignore them, keeping her focus solely on the man before her as she carefully approached him. He didn’t make any sudden movements, his brow furrowing as a muscle in his jaw ticked.
Valerie flashed her badge to prove she wasn’t bullshitting. “Get your hands in the air where I can see them.”
He slowly lifted his arms and spread his hands out wide. Then spoke with a voice like black gravel, matching his appearance all too well. “What’s going on here?”
She closed in on him, his presence becoming more and more overwhelming. Sirens resonated in the distance, sending a trickle of relief through her. He didn’t appear armed but that didn’t mean jack.
“Turn around and get down on the ground. Now!”
Anger consumed the confusion on his face but he surprisingly complied, giving her his back again before dropping to his knees with his hands above his head.
She kept her gun aimed and her mind submerged in the well of her calm. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d arrested someone; she usually shot to kill. “Cross your ankles,” she ordered, and he did so, crossing his booted ankles as if he’d done this before.
Valerie placed her foot in the space between his legs, so if he attempted to stand he would end up flat on his face. People finally backed away as she removed her tungsten carbide handcuffs from her utility belt, gripping the Beretta with knuckles white as chalk. Tungsten carbide was the only metal strong enough to hold a vampire, but she used it on everyone, regardless of species. Two New Rochelle cruisers whipped into the gas station, blocking off both exits before four officers leapt out of their respective vehicles. Valerie put the gun up and cuffed Blaze’s dominant hand, swinging his right arm around before latching onto the left.
He didn’t put up a fight. He didn’t even flinch. But he balled his big hands into fists at his back. She read him his Miranda rights as she cinched the cuffs around both of his thick wrists.
“You have the right to remain silent—”
“I have the right to know what’s going on,” he growled, showing her his savage profile.
“Anything you do or say can be used against you in a court of law.”
“What are you arresting me for?”
“You have the right to an attorney.”
“Fuck the attorney—”
She yanked the chain of his cuffs, bringing his solid body against her as the faint scent of cologne tickled her nose. She leaned into his ear, anger flashing through her as she thought of bloody grass and charred flesh.

“You’re under arrest for the murder of Elena Delgado. Now get the fuck up and move.”
