My Review:

3.5 stars

Initially, I wasn’t sure how to receive Madoc because he gave off an air of haughtiness and arrogance that the author managed to transfer to the book itself - that's definitely a writing talent. I’m not sure if that was the intent, but it came across making him seem unlikeable. I think he was supposed to be intimidating, but only because I was actually told he was trying to intimidate Kathryn. There was more telling than showing throughout the book. For me, I don’t want to laugh because the character is cackling. I want to be told a joke and laugh on my own if I find it funny, especially in the cases where Ryanne (Kathryn's best friend) would say something that Kathryn didn’t quite find funny. It would have been better for it to feel as though Ryanne and I shared a joke at Kathryn’s expense.

I honestly didn’t get pulled into the book until roughly Chapter 16 (ish). I want to read a book that grips me within the first chapter and that didn’t happen. I think the layout of the book was meant to have Madoc and Kathryn get to know each other, but it came across as uneventful and made it seem as though the true danger didn’t make an appearance until Madoc was “healed,” so to speak. That made it seem unrealistic. The terrorists were watching him and knew that he was injured. It would have made more sense for them to attack him when he was weakest. I think it would have made more sense for them getting to know each other better to be parallel with the looming danger. It would have made the book more interesting sooner.

I also wish there was more background on Madoc and Kennedy. She entered the picture as a source of contentment and somewhat staked a claim on Madoc, but she disappeared just as quickly - strange since she was essentially the face of Madoc's business front. With the way she attacked Kathryn's character, I expected more from her. I'm glad it didn't turn into a love triangle, but more details would have been interesting. There was no closure to her character, she just disappeared.

I felt like Madoc also lied unnecessarily to Kathryn about his reasoning for giving her the cold shoulder the second time around. She knew what his job was at that point and she knew the danger he faced. It seems like it would have been easier for him to tell her that she too would be affected by that danger, especially since he ended up having to go after her anyway. I also felt like with their level of expertise, it should have been obvious who was the new target of the terrorists. With all their technology, that one should have been figured out much sooner, but it did add that level of intrigue that some novels lack. The descriptions and the scene building were amazing. It was very easy to picture the locations within the novel.

Overall, I liked the book and would read more from this author.

Synopsis
The Hardass

Focused and in control at all times. Most people think I’m a prick—and I’ll be the first to admit that’s probably true. But I’d rather be a take-no-shit cop than the kind of man genetics says I should be. You break the law, you pay the price. I don’t give a damn if you’re the captain’s daughter or the Queen of friggin’ England.

The Princess

I have no patience for the cocky men my father oversees. Or maybe it’s just Sergeant Hardass who gets under my skin. Not only is he sexy as sin, he refuses to cut me a break.

And now I have to work with the arrogant jerk.

I shouldn’t want him, but a secret part of me craves his unforgiving edge. He could give me everything I need, but, first, I have to break down his walls.

I have to make him bend.

About the Author
Molly
Like many novelists, especially romance writers, my infatuation with a good love story began early. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I’ll admit that Barbie and Ken acted more than a couple of the story lines I had in my head (sorry, Mom, but, no, not all of them were kid-appropriate). The obsession continued to grow as I got older and, whenever I left home, I always had a wire-bound notebook and a blue ballpoint pen in hand. In fact, every August, I still get that goofy, schoolgirl itch to buy up oodles of pens and paper, because, while I love my laptop, nothing compares to writing long-hand. If the house is quiet and there’s a thunderstorm rumbling outside, even better.

Not that I have the slightest a clue what a quiet house is anymore. Having three rambunctious (but awesome) kids, a zippy dog and a pesky cat has completely blurred my memory of peace and quiet. Oh, and I have a husband too–I call him the FisherGuy–and he’s probably louder and crazier than all the rest. I think I’ll keep him though. After all, he keeps me in fresh fish year-round (yum!) and he’s good hero material. Did I mention he’s also a firefighter?

We live in Northern Wisconsin and, let me tell ya, living here has provided lots of small-town fodder for this writer’s overactive imagination. Of course, I know no one who’s lived anything close to the steamy experiences I write about (not that I’d tell ya if I did *wink*). There’s something inherently sexy about not knowing what goes on behind closed doors…or even better, letting my imagination run free, concocting all kinds of stories and scenarios and putting them down on paper. Or my laptop.

Excerpt

“What are you thinking?” he mumbles, his large frame still pinning me to the mattress, his face buried in the spot low on my neck he seems to like. “That I feel safe,” I tell him, surprised at my own conclusion. “In more than one way, actually,” I add. “I’m not sure how long it’s been, maybe I never had it, but I’m not scared of the future anymore. Or of letting myself feel.” Dino pushes up on his elbows, all his attention focused on my face as I smile. “I admit that for a while last night I wasn’t so sure, but that disappeared when I saw you waiting for me. I’m grateful for your words but I didn’t need them. Trust is not something I easily give, but I trust you.” “Thank you.” His lips move against mine before he lifts away. “I was an ass and it had little to do with you. It was the realization I was failing as a parent.” A sharp shake of his head cuts off the protest that was forming on my lips. “I wasn’t watching Gina. I was too preoccupied with other things to notice she was slipping. Last night was a knee jerk reaction. I have to get used to sharing things again. I haven’t been able to do that in a long time. It was always just easier to deal with things myself. I should’ve talked to you.” “Stop.” I cover his mouth with my fingers. “Enough of the self-recriminations. Lord knows we both have a knack for those. I still struggle with the what-ifs. I don’t want to do that with you. Don’t want to have regrets of any kind, and the only way to do that is to be completely open. Give you all of me, warts and all. All I want in return is to trust that when we hit the inevitable bumps in the road, you’ll have my back, just as I have yours.” Dino’s beautiful brown eyes turn liquid as I watch him swallow hard. “Always.” His gruff voice cracks on the single word as he rolls off me and swings his legs over the side of the bed. I watch the muscles in his ass flex as he makes his way to the bathroom. Nice view. One I wouldn’t mind enjoying the rest of my life. My thoughts grind to a halt. Am I really considering that? The rest of my life?
