"Swoon. Sigh. Beautiful, gorgeous love story. You renew my faith in true love, Katy Regnery. And a brilliant take off on the little mermaid. People are going to love this one." --Mia Sheridan, New York Times bestselling author of Archer's Voice
From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.
In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman's daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party where she is working.
Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.
Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.
All novels Katy Regnery's ~a modern fairytale~ collection are written as fundraisers. 10% of the e-book sales for in March and April 2017 will be donated.
I was a bit skeptical since this was my first novel from the author and in the past when I've heard "loosely based on" it meant little to no change and you knew exactly how the story would go. However, Katy Regnery literally means loosely based on The Little Mermaid and I enjoyed that very much.
While we have an Erik - the Governor's son, we don't have an Ariel, we have the sweet, innocent, and immensely sheltered, Laire. Just like Ariel, she wants to get away, but she doesn't want to disappoint her family, which left her extremely cautious. She worried about what her family would think of her. She worried about how the people of her island would react to her wanting more from her life. She was right to worry because when she took that leap, the reaction . . . pure agony. The judgement! I couldn't believe that they treated her as they did, but I actually understood it. I know how some people are locked in their ways and refuse to adjust to society's standards and that's what happened to Laire.
I hated that the thoughtlessness and malicious deeds of others left Erik and Laire so very broken, so separated. The loss of time could never be recovered and it was truly gut-wrenching. The notes to Erik were a great touch. It summarized what was happening in Laire's life as well as Erik's through her eyes, without being an information dump. I also liked the other character references: Ursula (Erik's mother, truly an evil sea creature LOL), Mrs. Sebastian (Laire's pseudo mom who always supported and encouraged her, even when no one else would).
Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to other with the warning that there are some scenes that will bring you to your knees and others that will make your heart soar. Katy ran the gamut with emotions. The connection between the characters was unrivaled and even over the years when they were sure they hated each other, their love was timeless.
